Choose a location that suits your transport route

Start with the arrival point and final delivery destinations when choosing a location. Compare distances and the number of handling operations, not just the storage rate. If stock will arrive in several batches, provide separate inbound and outbound schedules. This helps you request space for the expected peak stock rather than only the first truck.
Describe the unit that will actually arrive
Provide the external length, width and height of each loaded pallet type, including the pallet base and packaging. Record any overhang, gross weight and whether the loaded pallets can be stacked safely. For loose cartons, explain whether palletisation is needed on arrival and who will supply the materials.
Use the storage calculator for an initial volume estimate. Geometric volume does not automatically determine the required floor area, the number of rack positions or the invoice value. Ask for the billing unit, rounding rules and any minimum charge to be specified.
Conditions to discuss before delivery
- The product category, packaging and any handling restrictions.
- Documented requirements for temperature, humidity, hygiene or separation.
- Access to individual batches and the preferred dispatch sequence.
- Unloading appointments, vehicle type and the equipment required.
- How quantity discrepancies, damaged packaging and returns will be managed.
- Inventory checks, stock reporting and the terms of liability or insurance.
For food, beverages, sensitive goods or products with special requirements, send the specifications before scheduling delivery. Acceptance depends on the suitability of the space and the applicable authorisations. If you need refrigerated storage, a tax warehouse or a customs warehouse, request explicit confirmation that the required facilities and arrangements are available.
Compare the cost of the complete operation
Request separate prices for storage, receipt, loading, additional handling and order preparation, where available. Include the expected storage period and extension arrangements. A useful quotation explains what happens when stock increases, a delivery is postponed or a pallet needs repacking.
Also explain whether goods leave as full pallets, cartons or mixed orders. These are different operating patterns even when the incoming volume is identical. Record the expected frequency of collections so the proposed arrangement reflects how you actually sell and replenish stock.
